WE BECOME THE WORDS WE USE
Someone once told me “we become the words we use,” and it stuck with me.
To build a strong and unique culture it is important to carefully select your words. Words are powerful. They can build up or tear down, inspire or demotivate. Used repeatedly over time, the words we use begin to shape our behaviors and actions.
In our industry, the word “crew” is commonly used, but we prefer the word “team.” There is nothing wrong with the word “crew,” but we think that belonging to a “team” helps keep the idea of teamwork and cooperation top-of-mind. We use the terms “team member” and “team leader” instead of “employee.” Again, there is nothing wrong with the word “employee,” but “team member” fits our culture better and helps to reinforce the value of teamwork.
